It’s true: some humans do terrible things to our fellow man and the creatures we call family, but for every horrible act, a beaming light outshines it. Such is the case with the story of little Jordan.

He was a shell of a dog when he was discovered by rescuers. Jordan was unable to move as he sat despondently on the concrete basin of the Los Angeles River. As they assessed the situation, volunteers realized Jordan’s case required a unique set of skills, so L.A. on Cloud 9 contacted Hope For Paws for assistance.

When the team arrived, they discovered that Jordan’s leg had been chopped off by a mentally ill man who had been frustrated by Jordan’s severe case of mange. The man then placed him in a bag and tossed him 30 feet down the embankment, believing he was dead.

Jordan may have appeared to be dead, but he’s a survivor and a fighter.

He hung in there for two days before being discovered by volunteers who climbed down the bank to assist him.

Jordan was quickly lifted out of the riverbed and transported to an emergency veterinarian.

The fact that he was alive was considered a “miracle” by the veterinarian, but that was only the beginning of the many surprises that this brave little guy had in store for everyone. Jordan’s condition was critical, but his recovery seemed to begin the moment he walked through the doors. Finally, he was in capable and loving hands.

They gave him a few days to regain some strength, allowing him to bathe and begin treatment for the mange and other infections during that time. All of that love and attention rekindled his spirit and bolstered his resolve, and young Jordan was soon strong enough to undergo a blood transfusion and surgery, followed by plenty of rest.

He needed to regain his strength because he’d be leaving for his foster home in just a few days! Going from a filthy, concrete riverbed to having all of his wounds cleaned and treated, then recuperating in a safe and loving environment must have felt like a dream.

Lisa Chiarelli, his foster mother, saw to his every need and made him to and from follow-up appointments, while Lola and Frankie, his foster siblings, made him feel at home and loved.

Everyone was rooting for him, and they watched as he slowly recovered, encouraging him through a physical therapy program designed to get him back on his feet. Jordan’s feisty spirit emerged and he was goofing around, even winning tug-of-war games, because so many people had his back and were watching out for him. And he’s enticing his foster siblings to join him in the pool for a refreshing swim.

Jordan the Wonder Dog went from foster care to a forever home thanks to his tenacity and bravery. His family even has a Facebook page so that people can keep up with his exploits — and they can rest easy knowing that he’ll spend the rest of his life surrounded by people (and four-legged siblings) who will always have his best interests at heart.

Jordan’s story demonstrates that, despite the bad, there is more than enough good to push the darkness back.
